The People for the ethical treatment of animals have taken their rage out against Nintendo's beloved icon for the recent return of Mario's tanooki suit. After years of stomping on turtles, this is what they get mad at, not to mention being twenty years too late...
If they played Mario they'd know he grabs a feather to obtain the Tanooki suit.
For people who don't know, a Tanooki is a real animal native only in Japan that translates into raccoon dog who is saddenly hunted and skinned for profit. However, Mario uses his infamous (not made of real tanooki) suit to grant him the ability of flight (even though Tanooki's don't fly). Nintendo also created the Tanooki villain Tom Nook in the GCN title Animal Crossing several years ago to honor their beloved mammal
To show their disapproval, PETA has released a flash mini-game on their website called "Mario Kills Tanooki" Where a naked Tanooki chases a flying Mario who has stolen his skin through a bloody post-apocalyptic Mushroom Kingdom. It's quite disturbing.
PETA believes that Mario's usage of the suit will promote the hunting an killing of the poor creature. "Tanooki may be just a "suit" in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an animal, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur. We created our game to help inform people that in real life, Mario would be wearing the skin of an animal who was beaten, strangled or electrocuted, and it wouldn't give him any special powers other than the power of self-deception," as PETA claims.
Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely against the abuse of animals and the wearing of their fur, but PETA has fallen down the rabbit hole way too far to be taken seriously, and this is just another blatant attempt of their asinine eco-terrorism. Here's to hoping Nintendo sues them for copyright infringement.
