The original reason behind the Wii U started with the Wii. The Wii's name was supposed to sound just like it looks,'We'. The system was actually developed to appeal to everyone instead of just hardcore gamers. It was meant to be a family gaming system, and that's really what we got from it, apart from some excellent traditional Nintendo games.
The Wii U was another thing, Nintendo decided it was it's time to go back to it's hardcore gamers, as addressed at last years E3, and went with a name that basically said, 'Wii YOU', a good playoff of it's soon-to-be former system.
