DC Announces Before Watchmen, Alan Moore Not Happy

February 1, 2012

Rumors have been going around that a Watchmen sequel was going to be announced today, the rumor was only half true though. DC has announced today a new comic series titled Before Watchmen, which are prequels to the hit Watchmen series that came out in 1986.

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons won't be returning as the writers in any of the issues, but writers Brian Azaarello, Darwyn Cooke, J. Michael Straczynski and Len Wein will be working with artists Darwyn Cooke, Lee Bermejo, Amanda Conner, Adam Hughes, J.G. Jones, Any and Joe Kubert, Jae Lee, and John Higgins.

There will be seven different comic series relating to seven different characters in the Watchmen Universe with each issue having a two page story called Curse of the Crimson Corsair; the full roster is as followed:

  • Rorschach - Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
  • Minutemen -  Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
  • Comedian -  Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
  • Dr. Manhattan -  Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
  • Nite Owl -  Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
  • Ozymandias -  Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
  • Silk Spectre -  Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner

This is what DC has to say about about Curse of the Crimson Corsair:

Each week, a new issue will be released, and will feature a two-page back-up story called CURSE OF THE CRIMSON CORSAIR, written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by original series colorist John Higgins. There will also be a single issue, BEFORE WATCHMEN: EPILOGUE, featuring the work of various writers and artists, and a CRIMSON CORSAIR story by Wein and Higgins. "

Moore has commented on DC's decision to make a prequel to his hit series, and he doesn't seem as happy as others, but that's just Moore being himself due to his disliking of DC Comics. Moore has called the new series "completely shameless," and continues to say, "I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago." Moore won't take any action against DC for this project as he continues to say, ""I don’t want money. What I want is for this not to happen. As far as I know, there weren’t that many prequels or sequels to ‘Moby-Dick.’ ” Both Moore and Gibbons did not want to be part of Before Watchmen.
