Iron Man Falls Off The Wagon

July 22, 2011

Tony Stark's sobriety came to an end in Fear Itself #4, but even more in Invincible Iron Man #506. Earlier this month, Fear Itself #4 showed Tony sacrificing his sobriety in order to talk to Odin and Invincible Iron Man #506 continued with Tony's sacrifice.

At first, at the end of Invincible Iron Man #505, I thought Tony was holding some type of bomb to use on the Grey Gargoyler/Mokk, but I was mistaken as the current episode says that it was alcohol that Tony was carrying. The latter would've been cooler and made Tony look desperate, but I think this makes Tony look even more desperate.

Tony asked Odin to let him make weapons in order to defeat the Serpent and his Worthy, and surprisingly Odin agreed. Odin took him to the workshops of Svartalfheim, where Mjolnir was forged, from there, Tony worked slowly got along with the swearing dwarves as they cursed and made plans for the weapons that Tony needs. As all of this is going on, Tony is drunk, and he talks about missing the feeling of alcohol in him. He missed it so much that he decided to have a second drink with the dwarves, thus ending Tony's dry spell and putting him back as the person he once hated.

I believe that the weapons that Tony will forge, will be the weapons that turns the heroes of Earth into the Mighty. We know that the Mighty will be created from Asgardian magic, and if you consider that Thor got his power from Mjolnir (which was forged where Tony is right now), then the heroes will be turned into the Mighty with the weapons Tony makes for them.

While Tony is in Asgard being drunk and fighting with dwarves, Pepper Potts turns her attention to Paris to try to lend a hand there, but unknown to her, Sasha Hammer and a group of mechas too are in Paris, searching for Detroit Steal (who was pummeled by Mokk). Sasha is giving her group to shoot anything that moves, and they've already just ran into Pepper in her suit. Once they see her though, the panel changes and shows Mokk staring down right towards them all.

Tony is no longer sober, so how will this effect his future? Will he go back to be an alcoholic? Or will he stop once this is all over with? It's an interesting development for Tony, we all thought he was done with alcohol for good, but unfortunately he was too desperate to save the world.
