After Sega's major financial losses and layoff's, the publisher is focusing all attention to their biggest franchises and has big plans for reinventing the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is also possible that Sega will be taking a Skylanders route with releasing interactive figures.
Sega has made a statement on possible plans they have in store for Sonic's franchise.
-Sonic Team and Sega are looking better to monetize Sonic
-There will be a potential "massive" and "total" reboot and both teams are fully commited
-Speed, Platforming and surreal environments will still be there
-Sonic and Eggman's rivalry will remain but both might get a makeover
-The other characters might have a makeover as well, most likely Tails
-May create a new universe and characters
-New gameplay mechanics and gimmicks
-Zones will be expanded and become their own world
-Zones will also feature individual levels that will be called missions
-They will be using a whole new graphic engine
-Physical toys and collectibles may have an interactive component with a new cartoon series
-Sega is inspired by Skylander's success (will possibly lead to games that require physical collectibles)
-May offer classic characters as in game DLC
This is a pretty smart idea for Sega, considering Sonic is their biggest money-maker. Copying Skylanders is pretty wise, even if I don't really agree with it. But since Sonic is slowly regaining his old glory, now would be a good time to go back to the drawing board.
