What caught many people to the World of Warcraft was its eBay duplicate, the auction house. There, the Dwarfs and Elves could spend their hard-earned gold (or whatever currency they use in WoW) to bid on the item of their dreams to probably lose it to someone at the last second. Blizzard will be bringing it back for their action RPG, but they'll be going the extra mile for this one.
The new Auction House Display for Diablo III
Diablo III's auction house will use real money.
Finding a rare Item makes you more than just stronger, you can actually gain a profit for putting it up for auction. And instead of just one big Battle.net auction house, Blizzard has decided to set up several for each region across the world so there's no confusion on foreign currency.
However, if you don't want to risk or spend real money on virtual treasures, Blizzard will still be creating Auction Houses that uses virtual currency instead.
How does this benefit Blizzard? They'll charge you a "flat fee" for every item you put onto bid for real money. If valve can get TF2 players to fork out real money for virtual crap, then I'm sure Blizzard can too.
Diablo III will be released when hell freezes over.
