Review: Assassins Creed Revelations

November 21, 2011 2 comments

Since 2009 I've followed the life of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and grew a real attachment to him as I witnessed him grow from a bratty teen to a disciplined master assassin. Now our journey together has come to an end and it has been one hell of a ride. Not only have my questions been answered, but I know what to expect in next years Assassins Creed title. But a game can't be successful just on story alone, and while Revelations still uses the same formula as II and Brotherhood it adds a whole bunch of new game changers that keep it a fresh and most enjoyable experience. Welcome to Constantinople, the crossroads of the world.

The Good
-New gadgets and abilities are fun and keep the experience fresh
-Constantinople is beautiful and amazing to explore around
-Desmond sequences are unique
-All our questions are finally answered
-Secret locations are even funner than before
-Assassin brotherhood system is more advanced and fun
The Bad
-No horseback riding
-Den defense can get a bit repetitive
-New controls need some getting used to
The Ugly
-The poor begging woman makes her unwanted return...

Story

Three Assassins. Three different stories. As you progress through the game you learn more of Desmond's past, Ezio's present and Altairs future. The last two titles have made us ask so many questions and kept us hanging until now. All the mysteries concerning the first civilization, Subject 16's true identity, or even What happened to Altair after the events of Assassin's Creed, they're all there.
The story starts off with Desmond waking up in this limbo type area of the Animus known as the Island where fragmented data is sent. There he meets subject 16 himself, or at least the mind of 16 and helps Desmond restore his mind by separating his memories with Altair's and Ezio's. While you explore Constantinople as Ezio you will find data fragments hidden throughout the city. As you collect more you unlock key memories where you explore mazes in first person view as Desmond remembers key moments of his life.

The year is 1511, Ezio is now 50 years old and after three decades of fighting the Templars he wonders if he had a choice after all to live a normal life. Now he sets to Masayaf, where the Assassin Order was born, to learn the secrets of the brotherhood from the secret keys of Altair. However, Templars have gained control of the temple and already posses of one of the five keys. After this slight speed bump he travels East towards Constantinople to search for the remaining keys and to help the Constantine Assassins fight the Byzatine and Templars who are struggling to control the city. During his journey he meets Sofia Sartor, a Venetian bookseller who has caught the attention of our Master Assassin. With her vast knowledge of code encrypting, she aids Ezio in finding the keys, unbeknownst of what purpose they serve. While Ezio's attachment to her grows every day, he dares not tell her of his true purposes to keep her out of harms way, making him question his life even more.

At the end of Assassins Creed Altair has killen his teacher and leader Al-Mualim for using the apple of eden to control the minds of the people of Masayaf, what the Assassin Order stands against most of all. After his funeral Altair stands up to take the role as Mentor, keeper of the orders secrets and knowledge and leader.

Altair burns his body to make sure Al-Mualim is dead after seeing what the apple can do.

However an assassin named Abbas is not happy about Altairs decision. He believes that Altair is on a power trip and killed Al-Mualim to gain the role as Mentor, while he tries to convince him otherwise Abbas does not believe him. So the struggle for control of the Assassin Order immerses.

Each of the three assassins stories comes with major events and twists that the end that truly get you excited for what Ubisoft is planning next. But it was also its use of tying major historical figures with the Assassin vs. Templar element and rich character development that this series is famous for that made this possibly the best story in the series so far.

Story Grade: A+

Graphics

The Assassins Creed Series always had beautiful environments and well detailed and animated character models and that remains today. While renaissance Italy was always a sight to behold in II and Brotherhood, Constantinople was a fresh breath of air to the series. And although the city was a very closed in environment it was still full of life and very fun to move around. The only problem was this made horseback riding obsolete which will certainly sadden people but it doesn't ruin the experience.

A Kodak moment on every corner

But we don't only get to see the beauty that is Constantinople, around three quarters through the game Ezio travels to the underground city of Cappadocia. The massive cave houses thousands of people with flickering lamposts beautifully giving life to the would be dim city. The perfect example of Ubisofts ability to recapture history and bring it to life in the series.

Even the concept art doesn't do it justice

Graphics Grade: A

Sound

Revelations has a beautifully orchestrated soundtrack that fits into the world of Constantinople. Whether you're just exploring the rooftops, fighting guards or even running away from them, Ubisoft has crafted music that fits into every moment of the game while you can also hear the bustling life of the city.

The people of Constantina also have their own sound as well. Instead of just stick the old audio file from Assassins Creed, the city and its inhabitants have their own sounds and voices, a smart but expected move from Ubisoft. And all the noises of the world and your gadgets are unique. For example Ezio's hidden pistol creates a loud bang that just snaps at your ears and creates an echo that can be heard from possibly miles.

The voice acting is also brilliantly well done. The new characters have done great performances and really fit their personality. Roger Craig Smith delivers another amazing performance as Ezio Auditore. He truly created the feeling of how far he has aged from the slight rasp when he talks to making a loud grunt of pain after falling only a few feet. Altair has received a new voice actor but does an amazing job of giving him an actual Syrian accent that still seems reminiscent of his old voice from the first game.

Sound Grade: B+

Gameplay

Most game developers use the term "If it aint broke, don't fix it", however it doesn't hurt to add some new features to keep things fresh. And not only did Ubisoft did that, these new features help make the game feel like a whole new experience.

The biggest game changer is Ezio's latest weapon, the Hookblade. This weapon allows Ezio to traverse the environment and amazing speed whether you are zip-lining across buildings, scaling a massive tower or even using hanging lamps to use a long jump. But it also makes him more effective in combat. You can run towards an enemy and hold the grab button to spin on his back, toss him to the ground and continue a kill chain combo from there on. It also allows him to assassinate enemies from a far ledge, something Ezio could never do before.

Ezio ages like wine. He only gets better with age.

The control scheme has changed this time around and while it wasn't to drastic it did take a while to get accustomed to it. The biggest one is that the 'Y' button (triangle on PS3) now uses Ezio's secondary weapon while 'X' (square) is his primary. This means a new button was to be needed for Ezio's Eagle Vision. However this has also gotten a major upgrade as well. The newly titled Eagle Sense can be activated by pressing the left stick (both controllers), this allows Ezio to discern his enemies, hiding spots, his assassination targets and allies just like before. But now he can see the travel pattern of enemy guards, see where his target has been and where he/she is going or even spot out targets when they're hiding in a group.

Den Defense is a tower defense type mini-game where you command you assassin troops to defend an Assassin Den you captured from the Templars. You can summon a variety of assassins and blockades that can be upgraded to fight off swarms of Templar invaders until the last wave which is usually a mini boss. While it is simple and fun at first it doesn't really evolve much afterwards and gets old quickly, however these are optional as you can just send one of your assassin students to take care of it for you.

Desmond has his own gameplay as well and while it is simple, the setup, difficulty and art direction makes it very fun to play. During his sequences you go into first person view and travel through M.C. Escher style like mazes with only two tools: a flat platform and a slanting one. You can place them to help you go though obstacles you normally can't traverse. While it is simple the puzzles vary from multiple objectives and can get really challenging but in a good way.

I don't think were in Kansas anymore...

Sadly Altair's gameplay hasn't really changed since the first except it played more like II, and the missions were pretty bland and boring as you only stayed in Masyaf during these event's. However what kept them even mildly interesting was learning about Altairs life after the event's of the first game and his spin-offs. But the rest of the game was superb in the field of playability so it did not suffer.

Gameplay Grade: A-

I do want to make a note here that I have NOT played the multiplayer so it did not effect my final grading of the overall gameplay.

Replay

While the first two barely had any replay value other than finding the hidden collectibles (flags and feathers) Brotherhood and Revelations has done some things to keep you hooked after beating the story (no pun intended). We are again given the ability to replay any mission we can and have the extra challenge of getting full synchronization if you failed to do so before. And there are hidden locations that you can return to in case you missed them.

Although multiplayer was introduced in Brotherhood, Ubisoft did much more than add a new mode and maps. Now characters are even more customizable as you can change their appearance, weapons and colors to match you're preferred taste. Abilities and Perks can be purchased and upgraded every time you level up and progress. Revelations will keep you playing for a while.

Replay Grade: C+

Ubisoft so far has been doing a very good job of releasing a yearly Assassins Creed title and keeping the original formula fresh with tons of new tweaks and upgrades. With the conclusion to the Assassins Creed trilogy only a year away, one should not play it until they have already have played Revelations. And this one a certain buy for any fan of the series who want their questions finally answered but want to have a blast while doing so.

Final Grade: A-

With the new Assassins Creed: Revalations out, DLC has ALREADY been announced. Ubisoft sure is milking it.
First we have Ancestors Character Pack on December 13. This pack introduces four new multiplayer characters: the Corsair, Privateer, Brigand and the Gladiator. Each character has their own unique taunts, weapons, and of course, assassination moves. This pack will cost only $3.99 on PlayStation Network and 320 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live.
Ubisoft announced that there would yet again, another DLC pack, hopefully with more content, but has not projected any news about it.

Catch Up On Assassin's Creed With This Video

November 12, 2011 0 comments

With the release of Assassin's Creed: Revelations in just a few more days, Ubisoft has released a video for those that need some catching up on the story that revolves around Desmond and his ancestors.

The video is a very basic summary of all three Assassin's Creed games; it doesn't go into too much detail probably because Ubisoft doesn't want to spoil the good stuff for players, that or they want people to go out and buy the game to experience it all.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations hits stores November 15 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

New Assassins Creed to be released in 2012

November 8, 2011 0 comments

Ubisoft is planning to release another Assassins Creed title next year, and it's going to be a big one. CEO Yves Guillermot confirmed the news today.

"There will be another great, full-fledged Assassin’s Creed title next year, It will be a major release and we’ll be communicating more about it in the coming months."

Early details were given in this months issue of Eurogamer stating that this next one will be the conclusion of Desmonds story. Could this be the long awaited Assassins Creed 3? We'll find out very soon.

Creative Director Alexandre Amancio commented on the recent news. "In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point. We have the Ezio cycle and the Altair cycle, and both of those are set to conclude in Revelations, and we have the Desmond cycle, which is set to end on December 2012. But there's many cycles within the brand – that's the whole point. History is our playground."

Stay tuned for more info on the next Assassin's Creed game.

Let Magneto Tell You How To Play Assassin's Creed: Revelation's Multiplayer

November 4, 2011 0 comments

I think there's something different about me when I watch an Assassin's Creed Multiplayer trailer and get excited to hear Tome Kane narrating.

Back onto track though, a new trailer has been released showing off all the different ways players can go against their enemies for Assassin's Creed: Revelations's multiplayer, which is a lot. Just go ahead and watch the trailer, the multiplayer seems like it's going to be crazy.

New Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Trailer

October 17, 2011 0 comments

If you're tired of the constant shooter multiplayer games, then you should give the multiplayer in Assassin's Creed: Revelations a try! In Brotherhood, Ubisoft gave us new ways to kill other people online with its unique cat and mouse, hide and seek multiplayer.

It will be returning with not only with upgrades to how it plays, but graphics will be raised as well. This trailer lets you see the beautiful environments and the new facial expressions your character will emote when being gored. It's a minor upgrade but really adds the authenticity to the game, it's quite funny to hear them scream as well.

Making bombs in Revelations

October 7, 2011 0 comments

Since Assassin's Creed II Ubisoft gave us the use of the smoke bomb, a very nifty device that allowed us to escape or even disorient our target and his guards allowing us to kill him then walk away like a smooth criminal.

Now Ubisoft decided not to just give us an upgraded version of it, but a whole new system that allows us to create our own bombs that do a whole bunch of different actions. Watch this new trailer to see how bomb constructing is done.

Some things that they didn't point out is that you carry three types of bombs in your pouch: Lethal, Diversion and Tactical. Their names are pretty self explanatory, here are some videos to showcase what type of bombs Ezio has at his disposal.

New Revelations Trailer details Ezio's Journey

October 4, 2011 0 comments

Want more Assassin's Creed? Of course you do! Ubisoft released a new trailer outlining Ezio's story in the game. Although we already we know his role, we get some juicy new footage of new places enemies and missions beautifully narrated by the master Assassin himself.

I would definitely like to see trailers like this revolving around Altair and Desmond, they're starring in this game too and they need the spotlight also.

Assassins Creed will continue after the end of Desmonds tale

October 3, 2011 0 comments

Who else saw this coming? Straight from the get go, Ubisoft planned for the story of Desmond Miles to end in the year 2012, but it doesn't mean its the end of Assassin's Creed as a series.

In case you didn't know, The story of Desmond Miles takes place in the near future of 2012 and spans across only a couple of months with it revolving around the whole "end of the world in december 2012" Theory. Creative Director Alexandre Amacio had this to say.

"In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point."

Since Revelations will be out soon and only mark the end of Ezio's and Altair's story, a new Assassin's Creed (most likely III) will be released in next year, marking the end of Desmond's story, but Assassin's Creed won't.

"Assassin's Creed is all about cycles, We have the Ezio cycle and the Altair cycle, and both of those are set to conclude in Revelations, and we have the Desmond cycle, which is set to end on December 2012. But there's many cycles within the brand – that's the whole point. History is our playground."

Amancio also wanted to state that future Assassin titles won't follow a yearly release like they are now. With the end of the main story, they will have more development time for later releases.

"Our development approach is changing so our cycles aren't structured the same way – so it gives us a little bit more development time."

Assassins Creed Revelations for PC delayed.

September 29, 2011 0 comments

Those who were planning on getting Assassin's Creed for PC will have to wait another month. Ubisoft made the official announcement today.

"Assassin's Creed Revelations will launch on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 15 and PC in December."

The delay was most expected due to production problems but Ubisoft hasn't said why yet. More news when I get some info.

A look of Ezios new moves and toys

September 28, 2011 0 comments

If the extended trailer wasn't enough to show how bad-ass Ezio Auditore was to you, then these two new videos will.

With the coming of Assassin's Creed Revelations, Ezio receives some new gadgets from his Ottoman brothers. One is the new Hookblade. Not only does it make traveling and climbing a breeze, it makes you more agile in combat and can use it to escape easier as well. You can see it in action here.

Although Ezio is much older in the game, he still fights like a spry 20-year-old. And he only gets more lethal with age. Ezio will gain access to more weapons from Constantinople that make fighting more efficient. Check out his new moves below.

The best part of the Assassins Creed series is that how you want to approach the enemy is entirely your choice. You can do it the old fashioned Assassin way with some sleuthing then one stab though the abdomen, or you like to go in swords swinging, or stand on top of a rooftop and kill them from a distance with knives or your crossbow.

Now you can set them on fire too!

However, Brotherhood gave us a new way to kill, send someone else to do it! Ezio could signal his Assassin students to kill the target for him. The new apprentice system was really well done and refreshing to the series. Now it will be returning in Revelations with a considerable amount of upgrades. Your Assassins-in-training will have more story and background giving you a stronger attachment to them. They will also be more customizable including their clothes and what gadgets you want them to have.

Ubisoft has really proven themselves that they can release an AC title yearly but can still feel fresh and new. Revelations will be coming out November 15th for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Assassin's Creed Revelations Extended Trailer Makes Ezio A Complete Badass

September 26, 2011 2 comments

Remember that awesome Assassin's Creed Revelations trailer back from E3? Well Ubissoft has released the same trailer with a few more seconds of scenes along with dialogue instead of music.

The trailer indicates that the snowy fortress looking place where he fends off against hundreds on Templars is Masyaf, which now makes total sense. The whole trailer is awesome, especially the end, if the end doesn't prove how much of a badass Ezio can be, then I don't know what will.

Assassins Creed Revelations, the Three Heroes

September 23, 2011 0 comments

The Assassins creed series has managed to span across three generations within their story. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. They created a whole universe of these killing peace keepers spans through centuries fighting a silent war from an actual knightly order that dated back to the crusades.

But the series isn't about them, it's about the journey of our three protagonists Altair Ibn Al-Ahad, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and Desmond Miles. These assassins are all connected through bloodline and the mysterious apple, the piece of Eden. And the secrets of these three will be revealed in Ubisoft's next installment of Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Some new footage has been given to us showing a brief part of each Assassin's story in the game.

After the events of Brotherhood, Desmond is now in a coma and trapped within the animus. His only way to break free is to separate the memories between his and his two ancestors and put the pieces back together to fix his shattered mind.

Ezio has lived his whole life killing Templars for the good of mankind, but now he's at a turning point in his life whether this is the life he truly wants. So he travels to Masayaf to learn the secrets behind the Assassin order and learn of their origins so that he will gain some insight of his own person. That won't be easy considering Templars have just taken the fortress under control.

Very little is known about Altair's history. We've seen him turn from a cocky braggart to a well disciplined master Assassin in the first game. Now we shall learn the truth behind him as we visit his past, present and future as Ezio unlocks the secrets within.

One thing I can answer for you guys is that is still Altairs voice actor from the first game, he just changed it to a normal Syrian accent to help make it more realistic. It needs some getting used to.

All our questions (or at least most of them) will be answered in Revelations the coming November. Can't wait!

Assassins Creed Beta available to all (Sorta)

September 7, 2011 1 comments

In my last post I said the Assassin's Creed Revelations Beta was for PS+ users and Uplay users as well. Now Sony and Ubisoft has officially made the beta open for all everyone on the Playstation network.

Now you no longer have to own a premium account to partake in the Multiplayer beta. Don't waste time, for the beta will be ending soon! Still waiting for the 360 beta Ubisoft. >:/

Assassins Creed Revelations Beta is Live!

September 3, 2011 0 comments

Have a playstation plus account? Have a Uplay Account. (on your PS3) Well now's your chance to be part of the official Assassins Creed Revelations Multiplayer Beta which is officially live NOW.

The beta will feature 4 gameplay modes:
-Deathmatch
-Wanted
-Manhunt
-Artifact Assault (CTF)

3 Maps
-Constantinople
-Knights Hospital
-Antioch

9 Playable Templars
-The Sentinel
-The Vanguard
-The Guardian
-The Vizier
-The Thespian
-The Deacon
-The Bombadier
-The Trickster
-The Champion

And unlike Brotherhoods Multiplayer, you will have access to abilities and perks right from the get-go and can customize you characters outfit completely, clothing, weapons and colors.

While the multiplayer in "Brotherhood" was just dog piling on dead bodies, hopefully this one looks promising and will fix the mistakes from before. Here's some vids showing the new modes and gameplay.

Deathmatch on Knights Hospital

Manhunt on Hospital

So far it looks okay, I just want the stealth element to be integrated a lot better than in "Brotherhood" but manhunt looks like it did before, just bum-rushing kills. Hopefully that will change when the full game is released.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Multiplayer Beta

September 1, 2011 0 comments

For those lucky Playstation Plus and selected Playstation 3 Uplay members, the Assassin's Creed: Revelations multiplayer beta will kick off this Saturday and will go from the 3rd all the way until the 11th of September. The multiplayer is to be similiar to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's but with new modes and maps.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Animus Edition

August 27, 2011 0 comments

Special Editions, Collector's Editions, Ultimate Bundles or whatever you want to call them has been big this year. And Assassin's Creed: Revelations has a third one coming out; first Ubisoft announced the Signature Edition, then it was the Ultimate Bundle and now Ubisoft is announcing the Animus Edition.

The Animus Edition has some really cool stuff; they include an Encyclopedia and the game encased in an awesome looking box. That's not all though, there are tons of in-game items like the Vlad the Impaler mission, the Crusader and Ottoman Jester multiplayer characters, a cross bow, bombs, hidden bullet case, Assassin's Creed: Embers, and the Armor of Brutus.

All that sounds really cool, and I would love it. One problem though, it won't be available in the U.S. The Animus Edition will only be available in Europe and Australia. Bummer.
