Dota 2 Will Be Free-To-Play

June 1, 2012 0 comments

If you were wishing that Dota wouldn't be a subscription based game, then you should be happy as Valve has announced today via the Dota 2 blog that the game will be free-to-play.

On the blog, Valve states that they have addressed the top two most concerned things, whether or not Dota 2 will be free-to-play or not and if all the heroes will be free to play as or not. Well we already addressed the free-to-play part, and as for whether or not all heroes will be available free of charge, they will be free.

Not only will the game be free-to-play and the heroes will cost nothing, but Valve has also announced that there will be in-game microtransactions and that Dota 2 will be supported by the Steam Workshop. So if you have some great ideas for armor, weapons, clothing and other such things and you would like to see them in the game, then just upload your models onto Steam Workshop!

Valve has also set up a FAQs page for those who need it.

Valve And Blizard Finally Agrees On Dota Trademark

May 11, 2012 0 comments

Today Valve and Blizzard worked out an agreement due to a trademark problem that had to deal with Dota.

Due to the agreement, Valve will continue to be using the Dota name for Dota 2 and Dota merchandise while Blizzard will be using "Dota" for non-commercial Warcraft III and StarCraft II maps. This will be forcing Blizzard to change their StarCraft II Blizzard Dota game name to Blizzard All-Stars.

"Both Blizzard and Valve recognize that, at the end of the day, players just want to be able to play the games they're looking forward to, so we're happy to come to an agreement that helps both of us stay focused on that," said Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design at Blizzard Entertainment. "As part of this agreement, we're going to be changing the name of Blizzard DOTA to Blizzard All-Stars, which ultimately better reflects the design of our game. We look forward to going into more detail on that at a later date."

Meet The Juggernaut

September 29, 2011 0 comments

Valve isn't going in the direction of Team Fortress 2 when it comes to "Meet the [insert Dota 2 character name here]" introductions, but at least they are introducing a new character for the beta.

Lay your eyes on the Juggernaut, a mask wearing, sword wielding, shirtless man who has some luscious hair. Today Valve updated the beta with some fixes and adding some additional stuff, but the main focus is obviously the newly introduced character.

I don't play Dota 2 nor am I in the beta, so I really can't tell you what's what with this guy.

Dota 2 Beta Applications Might Start Being Accepted Soon

September 23, 2011 0 comments

If you have played anything Valve made or have waited for any game developed by Valve, then you know all about Valve time. If you don't know what Valve time is, then you're lucky, depending on how you look at it. Valve time is when Valve says they'll be releasing a game, but before the release date they will push the date back until it cycles back a few times. The next game that might be the next victim of Valve time is Dota 2.

Dota 2 was first showed to the public back at The International, but it's still far from being released to the public, that was the original thought though. Valve originally thought that it would take over a year to get out of the beta testing, but they think it won't take quit that long.

"Our original plan was to spend the next year or so in beta, adding new features and slowly growing the number of heroes until we reached a level of parity with Dota 1, at which point we’d release Dota 2 to the world. But the feedback we’re seeing everywhere is that people just want to play it, even though there’s still a ton of heroes yet to be implemented. We’ve also seen that the folks who are already in the beta are chomping at the bit to show everyone else some of the fun games they’ve had. So we decided our original plan was dumb."

Valve has ditched that original plan and has decided to do something different. Valve will be soon accepting the beta applications from last month. Players will be able to play the current version of Dota 2, which is almost the same version that was used in the Gamescom tournament.

Today, Valve is accepting Beta requests at the Dota 2 Tournament Site. All you have to do is log into Steam through the website and you are set to go. All that's left to do is wait until Valve gets back to you to see if you got into the beta or not.

Don't forget that the million dollar tournament starts tomorrow at Gamescom and will be live all the way through Sunday. All times are at CET (GMT +2) and will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Valve Releases Official Dota 2 Trailer

For all you Dota fans, Valve has released a trailer for their new upcoming game that will be shown to the public for the first time at Gamescom in two days.

Dota 2 Being Revealed At Gamescom

August 1, 2011 0 comments

This year at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Valve will be hosting The International. The International will take place August 17th-21st and will feature 16 of the best Dota teams in the world, in which they will compete in the Dota 2 Championship with the winning team receiving $1 million!

Gabe Newell has this to state about the game and tournament:

“The International is the first public Dota 2 event and will give the tens of millions of gamers playing Dota around the world their first look at the new game. I have had the good fortune to watch the competitors as they prepare for the tournament, and the level of play is extraordinary.”

This will be the first time Valve will be showing off Dota 2, but I'm not surprised about the game, I'm more surprised that the winning team gets $1 million. I would enter that tournament even thought I've never played Dota.

Dota 2 Might Have A Release Date

July 20, 2011 0 comments

Not much is known about Dota 2, except for that Valve will be working on, but other than that, it's pretty secretive. And knowing Valve, they'll be working on Valve time, or will they?

A voice actor for Dota 2, John Patrick Lowrie, comments about the release date for Dota 2:

“I think that they’re planning on releasing it in the fall. I think they’re finishing it up. Of course, I could be wrong, I’m just the hired help, but I believe that’s what they told me.”

Dota 2 might be hitting stores sooner than anyone ever thought, considering Valve is keeping all information close to them.

Steam's New Client Update

July 16, 2011 0 comments

Yesterday, Valve rolled out a message regarding an important Steam Client Update that's to happen overtime. The new update has two important features:

"Deliver better download rates in more places around the world, and also to simply streamline the publishing process on Steam, ultimately making it possible to ship more games than we would have been able to with the old system."

Not all game are currently using this, but Dota 2 will be the first game to be using the new systems, which will be "soon" says Valve, but considering Valve time, we can't be too sure on that one. Anyways, the only things that are currently using this new feature are the 1280x720 (HD) trailers you can download through Steam

Better downloads and bandwidth, I am completely fine with this update.
