Sonic Getting a Major Reboot

April 4, 2012 0 comments

After Sega's major financial losses and layoff's, the publisher is focusing all attention to their biggest franchises and has big plans for reinventing the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is also possible that Sega will be taking a Skylanders route with releasing interactive figures.
Sega has made a statement on possible plans they have in store for Sonic's franchise.
-Sonic Team and Sega are looking better to monetize Sonic
-There will be a potential "massive" and "total" reboot and both teams are fully commited
-Speed, Platforming and surreal environments will still be there
-Sonic and Eggman's rivalry will remain but both might get a makeover
-The other characters might have a makeover as well, most likely Tails
-May create a new universe and characters
-New gameplay mechanics and gimmicks
-Zones will be expanded and become their own world
-Zones will also feature individual levels that will be called missions
-They will be using a whole new graphic engine
-Physical toys and collectibles may have an interactive component with a new cartoon series
-Sega is inspired by Skylander's success (will possibly lead to games that require physical collectibles)
-May offer classic characters as in game DLC

This is a pretty smart idea for Sega, considering Sonic is their biggest money-maker. Copying Skylanders is pretty wise, even if I don't really agree with it. But since Sonic is slowly regaining his old glory, now would be a good time to go back to the drawing board.

DC 52 Covers

July 12, 2011 0 comments

While surfing the internet, I found this picture someone made that shows the covers of the upcoming DC 52 relaunch/reboot (whatever you want to call it) along with the writer and artist for the comics.

I'll most likely be checking out:
  • Justice League
  • The Flash
  • Green Arrow
  • Justice League International
  • Captain Atom
  • Green Lantern
  • Green Lantern Corps
  • Green Lantern: The New Guardians
  • Red Lanterns
  • Batman
  • Batman & Robin
  • Teen Titans
  • Static Shock
  • Deathstroke
  • OMAC
  • Blue Beetle
The others don't interest me as much, but I'll ask around and see what others thinks of them and I'll go from there. I'm still excited for this new relaunch/reboot since it will give me a chance to jump into DC without reading an excessive amount of comics.

If you want to learn a lot more about DC's new initiative, Comic Book Resources does an excellent job at doing so.

Some points are important enough to take notice of:

  • "DC Comics - The New 52" is the DC Entertainment publishing initiative that is an aggressive undertaking of launching the entire line of 52 DC Comics character series with all-new #1 first issues in September, accessible to both new and current readers.
  • The lead book is Justice League, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, in-stores August 31st.
  • Timely delivery of our books - top titles, week in and week out - is paramount to this new publishing initiative.
  • As partners, our goal is to provide brick-and-mortar retailers with world-class product (books with innovative stories and artwork that feature iconic characters) and world-class service (unrivaled marketing support, the industry's only co-op program, personal account service, etc.), and that is what we're going to continue to do.
  • 48 of the 52 titles in September are $2.99, the standard price for a 20 story-page art & editorial book, showing our unrivaled commitment to making comics affordable for new and existing readers alike.
  • DC Entertainment is diversifying its distribution platform by being the first major publisher to launch same-day digital - making periodical titles available digitally the same day as print, at the same price, beginning August 31st.

DC has said multiple times that this new initiative is not a reboot, but instead is a new launch with retold stories, but with a more modern approach. People will debate whether it is or not for quite some time I'm sure, but either way I think it might be a great approach for DC to bring in new readers. I'll be on top of these comics as soon as they come out, starting with Justice League #1 in August. I've been wanting to get into DC comics for quite some time and this gives me the perfect opportunity to do so.
