PSN Pass To Play Online

July 6, 2011

Yesterday, on a Konsolentreff (a Russian website), someone noticed, on the Resistance 3 PS3 Bundle Pack, that Resistance 3 requires something called the PSN Pass in order to play online. Many people speculated that the PSN Pass would be something similiar to EA's Online Pass, where you have to pay a fee in order to play the game you bought online.

"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities. This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.
This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

Sony finally shed some light for us today, the PSN Pass is similar to EA's Online Pass. Only certain games will be affected, those that are mainly focused on online play. When you buy a game that needs the pass, you then would then go to the PlayStation Store and purchase a PSN Pass from there. The current price is unknown at the moment, but some people are speculating a ten dollar price. Resistance 3 is not the only game that will require the PSN Pass; Twisted Metal, Uncharted 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One will need the special pass in order to play online.

One thing I liked about the PS3 is that the online was free, now part of it won't be free. At least it's not a monthly subscription, that would be worse. I do not play online on my PS3 a lot, I depend on my PC for that, but I hope my Marvel vs Capcom 3 won't be affected.
