First Look At The Wolverine

September 24, 2012 0 comments

The first look as Hugh Jackman as Wolverine from the upcoming The Wolverine movie has been released. The photo is basically Wolverine striking a shirtless pose with his adamantium claws popped out.

The Wolverine will have Wolverine slicing and dicing ninjas, Japanese gangs and the Silver Samurai. The movie will be heavily based off of the Wolverine miniseries from 1982 done by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller with James Mangold directing the film.

Expect to see The Wolverine out in theatres next year on July 26.

The Wolverine Not Connected To X-men Origins

August 13, 2012 0 comments

Critics and fans see X-Men Origins: Wolverine as a joke and do not take it seriously. That is why the new and upcoming Wolverine movie will not mention nor will it have any connection to X-Men Origins.

The news comes from Hugh Jackman himself during and interview with Total Film. “We’ve deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture,”says Jackman. “With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic.”

Jackman continues to say that The Wolverine will focus completely on Wolverine and will not have a big cast of other mutants.

The Wolverine is expected to be out in theatres on July 26, 2013.

The sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine will start filming this year according to Hugh Jackman via Twitter.

The Wolverine will begin shooting this August, where they will start is currently unknown but there is a high chance that it will be in Japan as the movie is being based off of the 1982 miniseries Wolverine. The movie will feature the well known Silver Samurai as he goes against Wolverine with an army of ninjas.

The movie will be based off of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's miniseries back in 1982, where Logan is in the Land of the Rising Sun fighting ninjas and crime lords for Mariko Yashida, Silver Samurai's half-sister.

Review: X-men Origins Wolverine (the game)

August 25, 2011 0 comments

I know it's a few years past its time but I just got the game and I had to give my review for it. I also wanted to demonstrate how I will be doing my reviews for later releases.

For my reviews of full-game titles, I will start off with an introduction describing the game. Next I will split the game into 5 categories: Story, Graphics, Sound, Gameplay and Replay Value. There each category will be graded from A being the highest and F being the lowest. Then I will average out the scores like a GPA. I will be adding + and - as well to keep things balanced. The closing with a conclusion with a recommendation whether to get the game or not.

So without further ado, here is my review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Video games and comic books has struggled to work together for years. Few gems like Arkham Asylum and Shattered dimensions are ever made. The same can be said for Video game adaptions of movies. So many games like these are doomed to be poorly received and has gained a stigma from gamers and readers alike.

So a video game adaptation of a movie adaptation of a comic book seems like a bold move for small-time Raven Software. However they managed to not only truly capture Wolverines Awesomeness, but made this one bloody, violent, gore-fest that's actually fun.

Story

The story follows the same path as the Movie Version of X-Men Origins, except with a lot more back story to Logan's Journey from his last mission with Team X in South Africa, to his escape for the weapon x facility. While the story is just as stale as the films, we still get the chance to see some of our favorite mutants that we didn't get to see before including Mystique and a Young Emma Frost. However the game does have a surprising ending that strays away from the main plot of the movie, but this isn't a game you get to follow the story.

Story Grade: D+

Graphics

While the graphics here are decent for current generation consoles they aren't anything near something to brag about. Also to let you guys know that there is a lot of blood. Most of the game blood will be splattering on the walls whether its the guy you just decapitated or a bomb blew up in your face, the screen will run with blood. Occasional glitching throughout the game and cut scenes take away the spur of the moment but never ruin the game. However there is one feature that is truly amazing.

Blood isn't purple...Still pretty awesome though.

Most previous games never utilized Wolverines mutant regeneration which allows him to heal from any wound possible, usually by either ignoring that ability or having it taken away by him from some stupid machine. This time around they finally gave Logan his special healing and it looks amazing. Wolverine has 4 layers of tissue (Organs, Muscle, Skin and Shirt) all of which gets torn when he receives heavy damage and all of which regenerates and heals over time. Sometimes I'd close in on him just to see his muscle regenerate around his adamantium skeleton. Pure. Geek. Greatness.

Skin today, gone tomorrow!

Graphics Grade: B-

Sound

The sound of Wolverine unleashing his adamantium claws is always music to my ears. The game comes with an orchestra of gunfire, explosions, slashes, gashes, crashes, yelling, screaming, taunting, explosions and many more sounds that all fit well into the experience. While most of the sound track is ambiance of your location, action music always comes up when enemies appear to set you in the mood for killing. Hugh Jackman, the actor behind Wolverine for all of the X-men movies and origins lends his voice for our hero in the game and while it isn't as stellar as his actual acting he still hits all the grunts, growls and roars right on the the mark. Supporting characters are voiced by other people not from the movie, most of them pretty cheesy and poorly acted.

Sound Grade: C+

Gameplay

Hack, Slash repeat is mainly the core of Wolverines game play, but that doesn't mean it's not fun as hell to do it. The combat set up is fairly simple having only a quick attack, heavy attack, grab special and block button but all these moves can be combined for a plethora of ways to maim anyone who gets in your way. There is one move however that is new to this game, the lunge. This nifty ability allows you to quickly home in at one of your targets from a long distance and lets you choose how to act afterwards. Its really useful when an enemy is firing from a gap your normal jump cant reach, but there comes a point where you rely on your lunge way too much.

I believe I can fly!

Most mini-and normal bosses can hurt you badly from close range, so the main tactic for almost every one is to wait for an opening, lunge on there back and repeatedly whittle their health for a small amount of time. This wouldn't be too bad if these kinds of bosses didn't appear as much as they did. However some bosses including Gambit, Sentinel, and Agent Zero did require a different tactic to winning which was refreshing and fun.

Edward Nord (a.k.a Agent Zero) was one of the better Boss fights

The game isn't always fight here, mover here, fight more guys there. Puzzling and platforming is also present in the game as well. And surprisingly these parts are fun and sometimes challenging, some at which requires you to use Wolverine's feral sense which helps you sees objects of interests, traps and even cloaked enemies.

While most of the game is just repetition, the combat is fun, gory and fluid enough to keep you hooked. A true guilty pleasure.

Playability Grade: B

Replay Value

While the main campaign will take a decent amount of time to complete there are a few things that will keep you playing for a little extra longer. You can go back to your completed missions to find any dog tags (collectibles that you find for exp and achievements/trophies) Mutagens (power ups that permanently affect wolverines abilities) and costume challenges to unlock Wolverines iconic outfits throughout the years.

Classic Wolverine

Legendary Wolverine

X-Force Wolverine

But if you're they kinda gamer where you want the game to be a real challenge, you unlock hard mode to truly test your skills. WARNING, if your start a new game you lose all your mutagens, dog tags, level progression and have to start all over. (don't worry, you still keep your costumes)

Deadpool's a pain on hard mode.

Replay Grade: C

Conclusion

While this game is just an adaptation of a bad movie and is not true gaming gold, it manages to capture the true spirit of a Wolverine comic and creates a fun but repetitive experience that most comic/movie licensed games fail to do from the get-go. I recommend this game for any hard-core fan of Wolverine (the character) and anybody who loves to rip people to shreds, decapitate them or even impaling them to a forklift.

Overall Grade: C+

Meet The New Avengers Cast

August 15, 2011 0 comments

It's been known since Comic Con International that the Avengers will be getting a new lineup, this isn't a new Avengers branch like New Avengers or Young Avengers and whatnot, the main Avenger team will be getting a new cast. And this image that was posted during comic con was obviously hinting at the recasting:

Instead of having Iron Man, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, The Protector, Thor, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and The Red Hulk, the recast will include:

  • Captain America
  • Black Panther
  • Spider-Woman
  • Hawkeye
  • Ms. Marvel
  • Iron Man
  • Vision
  • Spider-Man
  • The Protector
  • Wolverine

So it's pretty much the recent Avengers minus the Red Hulk but adding Captain America, Black Panther and Vision; not very interesting, but at least Hawkeye gets a new outfit that resembles his Ultimate counterpart; he looks like the odd one out with a shirt, some pants and a pair of shades while everyone else is wearing spandex or armor.

Steve Rogers is back as Captain America, but where did he get the new shield when it was just destroyed in Fear Itself #5? And where is Thor, shouldn't he be in the new lineup? I really am wondering if Thor really is going to be killed off, I mean you have Tanarus as the new God of Thunder and Thor's body is being carried off in a preview for Fear Itself #6. Only time will tell if Thor will be killed off and then return after a few months.

Anyways, the new lineup will debut in Avengers #19 with Michael Bendis writing and Daniel Acuna doing pencils. And don't forget that this will be during Norman's return along with H.A.M.M.E.R. and his Dark Avengers.

Wolverine Anime Review

August 2, 2011 0 comments

Who would've thought that an anime featuring a tall, skinny, hairless, teen age like Wolverine would actually be decently good. I for sure thought that the anime version of Wolverine would've been hilariously bad, well, I was wrong.

This adaption of Wolverine focuses more on the Japanese life of Logan's, with Mariko Yashida and her father, Shingen Yashida who is a Yakuza crime boss. In the first episode, Logan is basically trying to track down Mariko, who's been kidnapped by her own father. Wolverine goes from New York to Tokyo in order to get back his love.

Canadian beer is the only beer for Wolverine (love this scene)

Wolverine finds out where Mariko and Shingen is at and sneaks into their property where Shinken then discovered the whereabouts of Wolverine's hiding spot in the bushes. Logan and Mariko's old man gets in an argument with Mariko right there. Shinken then challenges Wolverine to a sword fight saying that if he lost, then he will hand over Mariko to Wolverine, and Wolverine being himself, accepts the duel.

After Shinken laying down some skin breaking blows, Wolverine then charges a Shinken, but gets brought down by the man Mariko was forced to marry - Hideki. He shot a dart in the back of Wolverine that was filled with some type of chemical. Wolverine's mutant gene wasn't enough for the dart since he gets right back up and yells as he unsheathes his adamantium claws.

Wolverine isn't the best adaption of the loveable Snikt Bub, but it's not the worse either. Only problem I really had was how Wolverine is being portrayed. If you just jumped into the middle of the show, you wouldn't even really know that it's a Wolverine related show. He acts like a typical cool teenage anime character, which isn't Wolverine at all. Everything about him is pretty bad, except for the first minute and a half of the show; the opening was probably the only part that kinda had Wolverine sound like he was Wolverine. Either than Wolverine's bad portrayal, I'm really digging the show; I just really like how it's focusing on the Japanese life of Wolverine, shows usually show the Weapon X part, so this is nice and new.

Overall, I'd give it 7.5/10, way better than the Iron Man anime.

Hugh Jackman Fights The Silver Samurai In The Wolverine

July 21, 2011 0 comments

Hugh Jackman was at Comic Con today to promote his new movie Real Steel, during his time there he confirmed that he'll be fighting the Silver Samurai in the upcoming The Wolverine movie that's suppose to come out Fall of next year. Hugh Jackman has this to say about the movie:

"Chris McQuarrie has written a fantastic script and it should turn out really good. I’ll fight the Silver Samurai in it so that should be exciting. Most of the filming will take place in Japan.”

The movie will be based off of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's Wolverine miniseries back in 1982, where Logan is in the Land of the Rising Sun fighting ninjas and crime lords for Mariko Yashida, Silver Samurai's half-sister.

Fear Itself So Far - Part 2

July 7, 2011 0 comments

When I left off last time, Captain America (Bucky) got a hole in his chest and an arm ripped right off from Sin/Skadi and Odin finally letting Thor go back to Earth. Since then, Thor finally made it back to Iron Man and Steve Rogers, but Steve isn't wearing his S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform anymore, he's showing off his Captain America uniform as he takes the role of the shield wielding hero. From there the three heads of the Avengers - Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - comes up with a plan; Cap will fight on the front lines, Iron Man will try to contact Odin and Thor will go lay a beating on the now fully powered Serpent King.

Iron Man is still in disarray from his horrific battle in Paris and he's willing to do anything to stop fear from spreading all over the world, even if it involves him crawling back to his one weakness. After awhile of being sober, Stark downs a bottle of wine as a sacrifice to gain Odin's attention at once was Asgard on Earth; this surely catches his attention. From there, a deal is made, no one for sure knows what the exact deal is though.

At that time, Thor finds out one hell of a twisting shock about himself in relations to whom the Serpent King is as he's smacking around some of the King's minions. The Serpent King reveals himself to be the brother of Odin, thus being the Uncle of Thor. The Serpent King tries to convince Thor to join his side because Odin has not told him any truth, but this doesn't dissuade Thor from the fight, he charges at the Serpent King. The Serpent King acts fast though and teleports him between the possessed Hulk and Thing where Thor will face a battle against true monsters.

Iron Man 2.0 is a bit late to the party in the sense that it's following the Absorbing Man's quest to gain his hammer, but in every other Fear Itself tie-in, he already has his hammer. As the hammer of Greithoth falls down to Earth, it destroys the barrier between the vast planet and Hell as China becomes Ground Zero. Since there is already a team that is prepared for something like this, Rhodey gets caught up in the action as him and the Prince of Orphans is teleported to China. Once teleported, the Prince of Orphans explains that he's part of the team that's ready to send the demons that escape back to Hell. Absorbing Man and Titania/Skirn meets War Machine and the Prince of Orphan's team (with Iron Fist included in that team). On the other side of the planet, Steve Rogers asks Doctor Strange for help to seal up hell where he warns that hell isn't the only thing that should worry Steve, Iron Fist too is a problem.

In San Francisco, the Mutants are soon to be facing a deadly force that's coming right their way - the unstoppable Juggernaut.

Despite Wolverine being in the X-Men, he's currently away in New York battling a Helicarrier that Norman Osborn designed back when he was in charge of H.A.M.M.E.R. that was stolen by a British Terrorist Group called S.T.R.I.K.E. Their reasons for stealing such the massive U.S.S. Prometheus is unclear at the moment, but it does appear that it is carrying a nuclear warhead as it's hovering over New York. As Wolverine hacks his way through into the Helicarrier, he is shortly taken down by a member of S.T.R.I.K.E., now they have the upper hand.

Here's what's going down so far in the world of Marvel as everyone is going crazy with fear. I'll keep you all informed on what else is going on once I get a hold of other tie-ins or after August 10th, which is when Book Five comes out.

The Wolverine

February 28, 2011 0 comments

Everyone's favorite over popular X-Men gets yet another spin-off movie; The Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is returning as the role of Wolverine, but he's not in shape just yet. In an interview, on the Red Carpet last night, he talks about getting in shape.

What I'm interested in this movies is the setting. This is suppose to take place during Wolverine's stay in Japan, which means no X-Men characters, or no more of this:

This will bring about a lot of interesting characters though. Mariko could be in it along with Silver Samurai, or maybe Itsu will show her face meaning hopefully Daken will have a cameo and possibly the Winter Soldier? I'm probably just getting my hopes up.
