Fear Itself Issue Six First Thought

September 16, 2011 0 comments

Last night I was able to read issue six of Fear Itself and this was probably the best chapter so far. This issue contained Captain America yelling at Odin, Thor receiving armor and a sword from Odin,  Iron Man throwing himself in a pit of boiling Uru and then Cap preparing to take on the Serpent King with rifles.

This issue revolved mainly around Captain America and showing how much he's on the edge. He's been through a lot so far, his best friend was stabbed in the chest, his symbolic shield has been shattered, he doesn't want to show the people that they have lost, he's worrying about the safety of the whole planet as he tries to figure out how's he's going to evacuate Earth, he has to worry about Thor's safety and now he's about to point a loaded rifle at the Serpent King and his Worthy while he stands on the front line with no one but himself.

This issue wasn't just about Cap though, there were parts with Thor and Iron Man also. Thor was carried into Heimdall's Observatory to be transported into Asgard by Captain America, Hawkeye, Protector and Mrs. Marvel. As they walk through the gate, they are greeted by Odin and Steve was not afraid to give him a piece of his mind.

Who the hell talks like that to Odin and keeps their finger? Captain freakin America, that's who!

Odin teleports Captain America and his bridage back to Earth as Odin carries Thor back to his room. From there, Odin explains to Thor that the Serpent King can be beaten and that it will require the items that beat him in the first place. Since Odin was the one to banish the Serpent, Odin is the one who has said items, so he bestows Thor with chest armor and "a blade forged to end all things", Ragnarok, the Odinsword. Unfortunately, we don't get to see this sword in action in this issue.

After receiving Odin's gifts, Odin and Thor head over to Svartalfheim where Tony and the dwarves are busy making the weapons to help defend against the Worthy. The weapons are a combination of Stark's repulsor tech and enchanted Uru. These weapons though, will only be "Earth's mightiest weapons for Earth's mightiest heroes" if Odin gives the blessing to them, and the only way to do that is to throw the weapons into boiling Uru. No big problem for Tony to do, he can easily throw weapons into boiling Uru, but his suit is to be blessed also to be made into a weapon, the armor that's biologically attached to him. Tony throws himself and the weapons into the cauldron to be transformed into something more powerful.

Captain America is still trying to figure out what to do, he has the whole world he needs to protect but he knows he's going to fail. Knowing that he's not going to make a difference doesn't stop him though, so he heads straight towards the Serpent's floating palace armed with just a handful of rifles so he can go head to head with the God of Fear himself.

This issue gives Captain America a great story, it shows how much Captain America will go through and still won't give up, even though he knows he has been beaten. He knows that the Serpent is going to win, but hell, he's still prepared to go against him and his Worthy with just a rifle. Hell, I haven't seen Steve use a gun in such a long time. I really enjoyed Cap's part in this issue, it was amazing and showed how persistent he is. And as for Iron Man, I cannot wait to see the Mighty in action in the next and final issue of Fear Itself next month in October.

This is by far my favorite issue from this event, it's continuing to be more and more amazing.

Iron Man Falls Off The Wagon

Tony Stark's sobriety came to an end in Fear Itself #4, but even more in Invincible Iron Man #506. Earlier this month, Fear Itself #4 showed Tony sacrificing his sobriety in order to talk to Odin and Invincible Iron Man #506 continued with Tony's sacrifice.

At first, at the end of Invincible Iron Man #505, I thought Tony was holding some type of bomb to use on the Grey Gargoyler/Mokk, but I was mistaken as the current episode says that it was alcohol that Tony was carrying. The latter would've been cooler and made Tony look desperate, but I think this makes Tony look even more desperate.

Tony asked Odin to let him make weapons in order to defeat the Serpent and his Worthy, and surprisingly Odin agreed. Odin took him to the workshops of Svartalfheim, where Mjolnir was forged, from there, Tony worked slowly got along with the swearing dwarves as they cursed and made plans for the weapons that Tony needs. As all of this is going on, Tony is drunk, and he talks about missing the feeling of alcohol in him. He missed it so much that he decided to have a second drink with the dwarves, thus ending Tony's dry spell and putting him back as the person he once hated.

I believe that the weapons that Tony will forge, will be the weapons that turns the heroes of Earth into the Mighty. We know that the Mighty will be created from Asgardian magic, and if you consider that Thor got his power from Mjolnir (which was forged where Tony is right now), then the heroes will be turned into the Mighty with the weapons Tony makes for them.

While Tony is in Asgard being drunk and fighting with dwarves, Pepper Potts turns her attention to Paris to try to lend a hand there, but unknown to her, Sasha Hammer and a group of mechas too are in Paris, searching for Detroit Steal (who was pummeled by Mokk). Sasha is giving her group to shoot anything that moves, and they've already just ran into Pepper in her suit. Once they see her though, the panel changes and shows Mokk staring down right towards them all.

Tony is no longer sober, so how will this effect his future? Will he go back to be an alcoholic? Or will he stop once this is all over with? It's an interesting development for Tony, we all thought he was done with alcohol for good, but unfortunately he was too desperate to save the world.

Fear Itself Book 5 Sneak Peak

July 12, 2011 0 comments

Since Book 5 of Fear Itself rolls out next month, Marvel threw us a bone and gave us a preview of the first five pages with Thor beating on Nuul and Angir along with Cap going after Skadi and Iron Man talking to Odin. But this also gives us an insight on the deal Tony strikes with Odin, on the cover you see him forging a sword, but the details are still unknown.

Fear Itself So Far - Part 2

July 7, 2011 0 comments

When I left off last time, Captain America (Bucky) got a hole in his chest and an arm ripped right off from Sin/Skadi and Odin finally letting Thor go back to Earth. Since then, Thor finally made it back to Iron Man and Steve Rogers, but Steve isn't wearing his S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform anymore, he's showing off his Captain America uniform as he takes the role of the shield wielding hero. From there the three heads of the Avengers - Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - comes up with a plan; Cap will fight on the front lines, Iron Man will try to contact Odin and Thor will go lay a beating on the now fully powered Serpent King.

Iron Man is still in disarray from his horrific battle in Paris and he's willing to do anything to stop fear from spreading all over the world, even if it involves him crawling back to his one weakness. After awhile of being sober, Stark downs a bottle of wine as a sacrifice to gain Odin's attention at once was Asgard on Earth; this surely catches his attention. From there, a deal is made, no one for sure knows what the exact deal is though.

At that time, Thor finds out one hell of a twisting shock about himself in relations to whom the Serpent King is as he's smacking around some of the King's minions. The Serpent King reveals himself to be the brother of Odin, thus being the Uncle of Thor. The Serpent King tries to convince Thor to join his side because Odin has not told him any truth, but this doesn't dissuade Thor from the fight, he charges at the Serpent King. The Serpent King acts fast though and teleports him between the possessed Hulk and Thing where Thor will face a battle against true monsters.

Iron Man 2.0 is a bit late to the party in the sense that it's following the Absorbing Man's quest to gain his hammer, but in every other Fear Itself tie-in, he already has his hammer. As the hammer of Greithoth falls down to Earth, it destroys the barrier between the vast planet and Hell as China becomes Ground Zero. Since there is already a team that is prepared for something like this, Rhodey gets caught up in the action as him and the Prince of Orphans is teleported to China. Once teleported, the Prince of Orphans explains that he's part of the team that's ready to send the demons that escape back to Hell. Absorbing Man and Titania/Skirn meets War Machine and the Prince of Orphan's team (with Iron Fist included in that team). On the other side of the planet, Steve Rogers asks Doctor Strange for help to seal up hell where he warns that hell isn't the only thing that should worry Steve, Iron Fist too is a problem.

In San Francisco, the Mutants are soon to be facing a deadly force that's coming right their way - the unstoppable Juggernaut.

Despite Wolverine being in the X-Men, he's currently away in New York battling a Helicarrier that Norman Osborn designed back when he was in charge of H.A.M.M.E.R. that was stolen by a British Terrorist Group called S.T.R.I.K.E. Their reasons for stealing such the massive U.S.S. Prometheus is unclear at the moment, but it does appear that it is carrying a nuclear warhead as it's hovering over New York. As Wolverine hacks his way through into the Helicarrier, he is shortly taken down by a member of S.T.R.I.K.E., now they have the upper hand.

Here's what's going down so far in the world of Marvel as everyone is going crazy with fear. I'll keep you all informed on what else is going on once I get a hold of other tie-ins or after August 10th, which is when Book Five comes out.

Fear Itself 2 Review

May 5, 2011 0 comments

Holy crap, if I thought Fear Itself #1 was amazing, then my mind was not prepared for Fear Itself #2. This event is getting better and better so far and I cannot wait for all the other Fear Itself arcs to come out. The Cocoa Pebbles I was eating at 1:30 in the morning almost fell out of my mouth as my jaw dropped in the second issue of Fear Itself and Fear Itself: Spider-Man.

Let me start off with Fear Itself #2, we got to finally find out who the Worthy are in this issue. Think of them as the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse, but there are 8 of them with magic hammers under the control of the Serpent King, who is an enemy of Odin. If he's an enemy of Odin, then you know you have a powerful bastard on your hands. Odin led the Asgardians back to their realm of Asgard, leaving Midgard to fend for itself as the Serpent King unleashes fear, all while Odin is dragging Thor in chains. Thor wants to stay and protect Midgard and he accuses Odin of being a coward. Not this doesn't make Odin happy, no one accuses the All-Father of being a coward, so he chains Thor and locks him up.

The whole issue had such an intense atmosphere, and revolves around lesser known characters; such as Titania and Absorbing Man. But there was action on every panel; the Juggernaut and Hulk got turned into a Worthy, thus being enslaved by these magical Hammers and now serve the Serpent King. I got chills from it all, it was extremely well done, Matt Fraction is doing a superb job on this.

Even Chris Yost is doing excellent in this event, and it shows in Fear Itself: Spider-Man. Here, Spider-Man is webbing through New York saving the fine citizens of New York during this fear storm. He isn't even making him usual jokes this time, he's 100% serious as he fears that Aunt May is hurt or dead.

Fear Itself is becoming extremely promising, and looks like it will be one of the top events Marvel has done. I cannot wait to see who else is going to be deemed as a Worthy, I'll be waiting diligently for the 3rd issue to come out.

Fear Itself First Thought

Fear Itself has been released today, and I just finished reading book one, and I have to say that this is going to be an excellent event. You've got Sin, Red Skull's daughter, picking up a hammer like Mjolnir and Odin leading the God's out of Midgard back to Asgard.

I believed that Civil War and Seige were the best events Marvel has had, and Fear Itself might beat it by the looks of it. I really can't wait till next month to get Book 2 and find out who the Worthy are. I highly recommend any comic book reader to get this. Best part of the comic was this here:

It wasn't an all out brawl between Thor and Odin, but nontheless it was incredible and made me wanting more.

I'm not sure if the Watcher will have a role in the upcoming books, but he does make a cameo in Book One.
