Action Comics #7 Variant Cover

February 13, 2012 0 comments

Today DC Comics has released Chris Burnham's variant cover for the upcoming Action Comics #7 that splits Superman in half (not literally) and represents him as Superman in Metropolis and Superman in Kandor.

"My initial instinct upon reading the issue was to do something with the bottled cities of Metropolis & Kandor," Burnham told The Source. "I love the bottled city of Kandor. A few years ago I was at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh with my then-3-year-old nephew, Noah. We stumbled upon this incredible sculpture exhibition by the late great Mike Kelley. The exhibit is simply called ‘Kandor’ and features dozens of astounding renditions of the bottled city. Google it. It’s amazing. And well worth tracking down in person if you get the chance. It was my favorite part of the museum and it was Noah’s too! I literally had to drag him out of there kicking and screaming after we’d spent almost an hour in there. Kandor love runs in the family! Anyhow. Rags had already done an excellent job with a literal approach to the bottled city idea, so I decided to go a little more conceptual. The pieces all fell into place for a good, old-fashioned split cover! Superman torn between two worlds! Kandor and Metropolis! Nature and nurture! Teflon and cotton! The cover also gave me the chance to work with the incomparable Gene Ha’s astoundingly complicated designs for Krypton and Kandor. It was a great challenge to be true to his vision without straight-up tracing what he’d already drawn."

Action Comics isn't the only thing Burnham is working on, he will also be working with Gran Morrison on Batman, Incorporated, which will be out on May 23.

Action Comics #7 will hit comic stores on March 7.

A Reminder To Spider-Man Edge Of Time

In order to remind us that Spider-man Edge of Time hits stores tomorrow, Activision has given us one last trailer for the new game featuring two web-slingers from the present and from the future as they show off their fighting skills and techniques.

I really want to play the game for the Anti-Venom, but don't forget to pick up the game tomorrow if you're planning on getting it.

My Overall Thought On The New 52

October 1, 2011 0 comments

The New 52 has come and gone and I have only read 28 out of the 52 and I have had a different experience with each one; some were really good and a few were really bad.

At first, I believed that The New 52 would retell stories, origin stories at the most, but that's what we didn't get at all; if you're rebooting series to bring in new stories, you should at least retell the origins of the characters, DC can still probably do that in the next few issues, and hopefully they will. Honestly, DC doesn't really need to explain Batman or Superman. That's just one big irk I have with the reboot, it doesn't go back all they way to the beginning, DC still uses stuff that happened in previous comics. I don't mind using Google to look up the back stories, but I don't want to do that with too many comics.

If I had to pick my top 10 from the twenty eight I have read, it would go like this:

  1. Aquaman
  2. Red Hood and the Outlaws
  3. Batman and Robin
  4. Batman
  5. Nightwing
  6. Deathstroke
  7. Suicide Squad
  8. Batman: The Dark Knight
  9. Blue Beetle
  10. Justice League

Surprisingly, Aquaman is my favorite by far (read my review on it if you want to know why). I'm going to continue reading most of the ones I have picked up, some I most likely won't continue with, but I will pick up some new ones I haven't read; I've heard All-Star Westerns and Blackhawks were good, so I'll have to give those a read. For those wondering, these are the one's I have read:

    • Action Comics
    • Aquaman
    • Batman
    • Batman: The Dark Knight
    • Batman and Robin
    • Blue Beetle
    • Catwoman
    • Deathstroke
    • Detective Comics
    • Green Arrow
    • Green Lantern
    • Green Lantern: New Guardians
    • Green Lantern Corps
    • Justice League
    • Justice League Dark
    • Justice League International
    • Legion Lost
    • Nightwing
    • O.M.A.C.
    • Red Hood and the Outlaws
    • Red Lanterns
    • Static Shock
    • Suicide Squad
    • Superman
    • Swamp Thing
    • Teen Titans
    • The Flash
    • Wonder Woman

There are some I haven't read yet, such as Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League Dark, Legion Lost and Teen Titans. Like I said though, I do plan on continuing with all of these except for Green Arrow, O.M.A.C., Swamp Thing and possibly Static Shock (I'm going to wait a few more issues to see what I'm going to do with Static Shock). Green Arrow, I couldn't get into, O.M.A.C. is too weird for me and holds nothing interesting, Swamp Thing and Static Shock are in the same boat, I want to like them but I'm having such a hard time with them.

In the end, I really did enjoy The New 52 and I believed it to be successful. I was a Marvel fan boy at first and now I'm enjoying the DC Universe way more than I initially thought I would, hell, Aquaman is my favorite comic for DC right now, who would've though that would happen. If you really want to jump into the DC Universe, then now is the chance, it's not 100% the best way, but it is the best way for now. Kudos to DC for drawing me in to their comics, I'm going to have a blast with these new comics I'm reading.

Scarlet Spider Showing His Face In Point One?

    September 30, 2011 0 comments

So far on the list, Marvel has teased the return of Nova, Ultron and The Defenders, so who else could possibly be next? It looks like Marvel has teased us the answer with today's new image for Point One with what appears to be The Scarlet Spider attacking some guy in a suit who's wearing a plastic Daredevil mask.

Back at Comic Con International, Marvel teased us with an image with Scarlet Spider's famous blue hoodie on fire with "Spider-Island" on it, do these two images have anything in common with each other? The Scarlet Spider can still make a triumphant return in Spider-Island considering it's not over yet.

The Jean Grey School Of Higher Learning

    September 28, 2011 0 comments

Mutants need a place to go to learn how to control their powers, co-exist with humans and feel protected and that's what Xavier was trying to do. But ever since Scott took over, it felt like the goal was to make an army of mutants, but that doesn't sit very well for him; that is why Wolverine has made The Jean Grey School of Higher Learning.

In an unexpected move, Wolverine will be opening a school for gifted youngsters to learn to control their newly manifested powers in Wolverine and the X-Men after the events of Schism.

Going from an anti-hero to a headmaster is a complete change for Wolverine, so hopefully Jason Aaron won't do anything too drastic with this change. I really do want to see how this will turn out, but I'm also afraid that Wolverine will be changing. I also want to see where Xavier falls, he's still alive in kicking it, but I'm pretty sure he'll land on Wolverine's side.

New 52 First Thoughts - From Detective Comics to Swamp Thing

    September 21, 2011 0 comments

    .
So far I'm enjoying DC's New 52, but I also have some disliking to it. The New 52 gives me a chance to plop into the DC Universe and start from fresh, I am able to read the comics all the way from the start even though I have no prior knowledge to some of the comics, that's what I initially thought at first.

Some of the comics that were released you need some backstory, like Static Shock's or Swamp Thing's. I know that you can pretty much guess what happens prior to the New 52 with them, but I was really expecting for DC to retell the story of every new relaunched comic that's going on, I wasn't expecting them just to move onto a new volume and just renumber the series. It really is a let down because i know nothing about Alec Holland and him being the Swamp thing, nor did I initially know that Hal is no longer a Green Lantern because the Guardians thought of him to be too powerful along with Sinestro regaining his status as a Green Lantern. I also did not know that Green Lantern is supposedly set five years after the new Justice League comic that just came out, which I thought was amazing. Finding that out led me to find out that I'm going to have to read Flashpoint to understand some of the things. I'm not too sure about this though, so please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going by what I'm reading when I Google some of the things in question.

Luckily, not all comics needs major backstory, as far as I know, which is not much since I've only read just a handful of the New 52. Everyone pretty much knows the origin of Batman already, which is why it is okay for Detective Comics and Batman and Robin to start the way it did; luckily I already knew about Damien though, because if I didn't, I would be so confused.

Detective Comics is starting off amazing, you already have some suspense in action in just the first issue. The whole feel to it was amazing, and I absolutely loved the role Joker has in it already; he's crazy and you have no idea what he's going to do, especially with Dollmaker skinning his face off with his own permission. Detective Comics has started with a bang and seems like it's going to continue to dish out the good stuff.

Batman and Robin is catching my interest a lot, even though Damien is making me hate him. You have such a great relationship with Bruce and Damien, not the regular father and son relationship though. You have two people who have been trained for most of their lives to do what they're doing, but yet they are so different. Even though Damien has been training for most of his young life, he's so inexperienced to thinking things through and being patient, whereas Bruce has mastered these techniques and is patient enough to try and teach his son the same. I think Peter Tomasi is doing well capturing Bruce's and Damie's opposite personalities and making them fit well with each other.

Action Comics is pretty much an origin story a bit, so far it's not showing Clark Kent's alien origin, instead it's showing the beginning of  Clark's life as he takes on the role of Superman. Superman also has a pretty well known backstory, so I don't expect them to go too much into his alien origin back on Krypton.

Green Arrow was something I couldn't get into, I really want to, but I just can't. It's something about it that won't let me get past the first page. Like I said, I want to get into this series, maybe I'll give it another chance. Oliver Queen's new look also reminds me a bit of Hawkeye's look in the Ultimate Universe.

Despite needing to know some background information to Green Lantern and Red Lanterns, both are pretty good. Sinestro is back to being in the Green Lanterns and is about to go against the Yellow Lanterns who have betrayed him and enslaved his race that he tried to save. Hal not being a Lantern is different for me, I've always seen him as a Green Lantern and it's pretty depressing seeing him trying to cope with being a normal person.

When I first saw Atrocitus, he was a rage induced maniac, now he's a confused little less raged induced caring maniac, which I like. Red Lanterns is shaping up to form something that has potential. I can see some people not liking how Atrocitus is changing, how it seems like he's going to be a hero, but every story needs a dynamic character or it's going to get old real fast, which is what will definitely will be needed if this is going to be an on-going series as opposed to a mini-series.

Justice League International is great, it gives readers a chance to get to know the characters that aren't well known to too many people, like Ice, Fire, Vixen, or August General In Iron. The only big leagues in there are Batman and Guy Gardner and possibly Booster Gold, I don't know too much about Booster really besides really basic stuff. I don't think JLI will be the best, but I think it has real potential and can hold it's own weight.

OMAC was a weird comic, I'm not too sure what I think about it honestly. I liked it, I read it all through and I liked it but I'm not too sure if I'm going to stick with it and read it all the way through. I liked Brother Eye's OMACs back in Infinite Crisis, which is what I was expecting, but instead it was more of a Buddy Blank kind of a thing. OMAC is for sure a weird little series, I'll see what the next few issues are like before seeing if I'll stick with it or not.

One of my favorite series from the New 52 is the new Suicide Squad. Harley Quinn's new look is extremely different, but it's not bad, it kind of works for her. It's also about time she updated her wardrobe, but I wish her design resembled her Arkham Asylum counterpart though, it seemed more clownish than her new design. I've heard some mixed feelings about Suicide Sqaud but my reaction to it so far is all positive; the cast seems like an interesting bunch of characters, even though I don't know anything about them besides Harley Quinn, I think I'm going to like Deadshot though. It also reminds me a bit of Thunderbolts, which I do enjoy with every other writer. If you do like how Thunderbolts is going about, then you would most likely enjoy the baddies in this group, who already have a mission to wipe out sixty thousand people.

Deathstroke is a character I've wanted to get into, and luckily the New 52 offered Deathstroke. The problem with this series, like some of the others, you're going to need backstory, but not in the way that you need to know it for the story. You'll need the backstory just to know who Deathstroke and how he is, which everyone knows is a "badass", Deathstroke will always remind you how much of a badass he is by the way. He is a badass though, no question about it, especially the way he handled the mission that was given to him by Christoph, who I assume is the man who gives him his missions.

Static Shock and Swamp Thing are in the same boat with me, I want to get into them, but I just can't; it's not like Green Arrow fortunately. What kind of kills it for me is all the backstory I need to know just to read a couple of relaunches. I've seen the Static Shock cartoon, so I know some stuff, but that stuff does not seem to carry into the comic at all. I have no idea what Static did before going to New York besides that he use to live in Dakota and that he got arrested for something. If you don't know anything about Static Shock, and you want to get into the series then you're going to need to do some research, which is what I'm currently trying to do. Now Swamp Thing, I guess all you're going to need to know is that Alec Holland is no longer tied with the Swamp Thing. I stopped reading about a quarter way because I want some background information on Swamp Thing, once I do that, I'm going to try and get back into it.

All in all, the New 52 is something I am not expecting it to be. I thought DC was relaunching comics from the start, starting over from scratch, each comic series having a fresh start. Instead I have only a few comics you could easily jump into without too much background story. Anything Green Lantern related looks like it's having information prior to the New 52. Most of the new comics are good though, don't get me wrong, I am enjoying them; I just expecting for DC to completely start from scratch.

Valkyrie Becomes A Fugitive In Fear Itself: The Fearless

    September 20, 2011 0 comments

Yesterday and the day before, Marvel released images pertaining to Fear Itself: The Fearless, in which Valkyrie is going around looking like she's attacking heroes. Well, today Marvel has released yet another related image but with Valkyrie going at Sin with the words "Unleash the power that slumbers! Rule the World."

Along with the image, Marvel has given us some information on what all this is about and what the mini-series will be about.

    2. A thrilling, yet desperate search for power across all the hidden corners of the Marvel Universe.
    3. Valkyrie becomes the Marvel Universe's most wanted fugitive, hunted by all the world's super heroes.

    The Mighty Finally Revealed

    September 16, 2011 0 comments

Earlier this Summer, Marvel released an image for the Mighty, the superheroes who are to go against the Worthy in Fear Itself. Back when we first found out about the Mighty, we were just given an image of eight silhouettes, well now, Marvel has released the full image of the Mighty.

At first, speculation went around that Red She Hulk was either Valyrie or Red She Hulk and that Black Widow was either Mockingbird of Black Widow, now we obviously know that it's Red She Hulk and Black Widow.

I really like the new designs for Mrs. Marvel, Iron Man, Wolverine and Spider-Man (they are the only ones who have a noticeable difference besides streaks of light). Tony's Destroyer Armor look is sure to kick some ass.

I can't wait to see these new weapons that Tony designed for the heroes in action this October in Fear Itself Issue Seven.

    Cable's Return In X-Sanction

    September 13, 2011 0 comments

Yesterday, Marvel released an image relating to the Avengers. It has the Avengers logo with a giant red cross-hair hovering over it with "December 2011" under it.

And today, Marvel has allowed Arune Singh, Tom Brevoort, Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness to speak about the meaning behind the image.

If you can remember back to San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel released an image with a certain X-Men character, it was actually more of a shining red eye and a metallic arm. The image in question was the teaser image for, what was, the upcoming Cable Reborn "Next Big Thing".

Cable will be returning this December to kick ass with extremely over-sized guns no mutant from this time can hold. But he's not going to be fighting any bad guys, it seems like he's going straight for the heroes, specifically the Avengers.

This new story line changed from Cable Reborn to X-Sanction. Other than the title and who Cable will be going against, nothing much was revealed; Marvel is, of course, keeping their mouth shut on this one. It's going to be an interesting event though, the Avengers and Mutant kind don't interact very much except for Wolverine. So seeing Cable go against Wolverine and his fellow Avengers is going to be a nice treat.

If you want to find out more, Comic Book Resources has a nice detailed article of Cable's return.

Alpha Flight Is Now A New Ongoing Series

    September 12, 2011 0 comments

I guess this is old news, but I just found out now that the new Alpha Flight series is now going to me an ongoing series. Marvel planned for Alpha Flight to be a mini-series that consisted of only eight issues, but now it's going to go on for way longer than that, that is if it doesn't get cancelled. The new ongoing series seems like it's going to issued once a month since issue five comes out on October 12th while issue six comes out November 23rd.

Either way though, Marvel has given us teaser images that includes Wolverine about to tear up Guardian, Vindicator laying a beating on Guardian and the two siblings, Northstar and Aurora, looking like they're about to get in a tussle with Sasquatch behind them.
